Chapter 14 ~ Mason

Harper seemed different after the incident this morning, and I couldn’t figure out why. I thought it was odd that it would have bothered her so much. I was relatively sure that wasn’t the first time something like that had happened at the inn.

If that wasn’t it, what was bothering her? When I’d joined her again in the kitchen, I’d been surprised at the way she’d thrown herself at me—not that I was upset with it, hell no! I loved that the woman went after what she wanted, but I also knew that until I talked to her, I was pretty much living on borrowed time.

It tasted bitter on my tongue, and I wanted to cleanse my palate. As we walked over to the Walton property, guilt settled heavily over my wide shoulders. I should have had a sign on my back that read, “traitor”.

It didn’t help that when I’d gone upstairs earlier, I’d called Bill Walton and spoken to him. He was adamant that he wanted the property gone and as soon as possible. I suggested he hold out a little bit and that maybe the developer might offer more money. I had merely been trying to find a way to stall until I could figure something else out.

He wanted the property gone and didn’t particularly care about losing out on a little bit of money. I knew that a hundred thousand or so wouldn’t make much difference to a bank account as funded as his. He was a ruthless and shrewd businessman who knew when to cut his losses and move on; hence, the quick sell.

After I’d gotten off the phone with him, I’d sat on the edge of the bed and glanced around the room. While the place definitely focused on the enjoyment of sexual relations, it was a clean and comfortable room. It was also very quiet, surprisingly so. I hadn’t heard a sound from any of the rooms last night, and I was generally a light sleeper, especially when I was someplace other than my own room.

I had taken a few minutes to check through e-mails, reply to a few, delete a couple more, and then I packed my stuff so that I could move to a different room.

I couldn’t wait to see what The Control Suite was like, and had found myself getting just a tiny bit aroused at the thought that maybe, just maybe, Harper would join me in that room tonight. I had a feeling that if she did, it wouldn’t be just to hold each other in our sleep.

That thought was confirmed when she’d thrown herself at me. I’d lost myself in her within a matter of seconds and didn’t even think of where we were or what we were supposed to be doing until someone cleared his throat behind us.

Damn—this woman could make me forget my own name.

As we approached the barn, one whiff of the hay transported me back to my teen years when my mom and I used to go horseback riding.
